If nothing else, Devastation is ambitious. Digitalo Studios' futuristic first-person shooter features more than 35 weapons, arcade-style and tactical modes of play, computer-controlled teammates, a detailed physics model, and single-player missions that incorporate "botmatch"-style base attack and defense objectives (that is, both you and your opponents are aided by computer-controlled "bot" characters). Unfortunately, Devastation tries to be a jack-of-all-trades, but is master of none, and it's lacking in a few key areas.

Incredible next-generation AI that gives enemies and NPCs micro-behaviors and heightened awareness, while teammates provide intelligent cooperation and assistance - they almost seem too real. Completely interactive environment with real world physics; everything can be used, destroyed or manipulated. Set traps with the garbage in the streets, or use a broken bottle to slash your way to victory. More than 30 unique weapons, including machine guns, swords, handguns, sniper weapons and incredible Rat Drones that allow you to "become the weapon".
Objective-based single player campaign, incorporating special skills like stealth, surveillance, hacking into security systems, sniping, and brute force. 32 massive photorealistic levels based off real-world textures, including 20 single player and 12 multiplayer maps, set in four stunning environments in the US and Asia. All the favorite multiplayer standards, including traditional head to head and competitive games, with both Arcade and Simulation settings - something for everyone, including an exciting new style of multiplayer gaming. Superior sound, from the ability to use noise to distract enemies or alert team mates, to the cutting edge soundtrack by Messy, the techno rebirth of members of Love & Rockets.
Like so many other action games, Devastation places you in the role of a rebel who must fight against an oppressive corporation that now controls most of the world. Devastation uses a bunch of clichéd events and settings to pound this familiar theme into a mush that is indistinguishable from plenty of other generic shooters. There's the subway level, the sewer level, the warehouse level, the part where you have to single-handedly fight an attack chopper, and the level where you get conked on the head, stripped of your weapons, and tossed in jail (though as it turns out, Devastation takes away your weapons and tosses you in jail not once, but twice).
Though freedom was obviously the first victim of Devastation's totalitarian corporate state, garbage collection appears to have been a close second. The game's Unreal-engine powered environments are filled with trash. It's never explicitly stated just what, exactly, the evil corporation is selling, but from the general makeup of the debris, it's probably soft drinks, Chinese food, or oil barrels. A lot of this busted-up bric-a-brac actually exists as independent objects in the world, all affected by an at least theoretically realistic physics model. For instance, you can shoot a milk crate in its upper left corner, and it'll tumble over its rear left axis.

Port Royale 2 takes you back to the beginning of the 17th century, when the great colonial powers were competing for control of the Caribbean and when towns could rapidly expand (and collapse again) over a short period of time.
Port Royale 2 might focus more on building shipping cartels than sea battles and swordplay, but its brilliantly realized design is more than just number crunching.
All the attention being paid toward the imminent release of the remake of Sid Meier's classic Pirates! is doing a disservice to another game set on the rolling waters of the Caribbean. Ascaron Entertainment's Port Royale 2 might focus more on shipping cartels than on sea battles and swordplay, but its brilliantly realized gameplay is more than just number crunching. Buccaneers, tropical locales, and piracy on the high seas are fully realized in Port Royale 2, and the intricate real-time design is geared to win over even those who aren't fans of economic simulations.
Accessibility is the biggest reason for this broad-based appeal. Unlike the first Port Royale, which dumped you into the deep end without even a tutorial, eight starter scenarios here cover every aspect of building a shipping career amid the feuding English, French, Spanish, and Dutch Caribbean colonies in the 16th and 17th centuries. Starting at the lowly rank of ship's boy, you soon trade goods, set up convoys with around a half-dozen different types of vessel from sloops to galleons, build businesses in towns, construct settlements of your own, stage sea battles, and even track Blackbeard for the governor of Havana. These scenarios practically form a game unto themselves. Most of these scenarios take well over an hour to complete, so by the time you're finished with them you'll be thoroughly prepared for the free play campaign (the game's only other mode of play).
Ease of use is further enhanced by the superb interface. Ships are maneuvered by right-clicking on a destination. Journeys can be accelerated by holding down the space bar to turn up time acceleration. Right-clicking on ports of call after arrival brings up the trading window, and this is where you buy and sell goods on a chart that shows prices and uses a color scheme to indicate the availability of goods. Yes, it's still a spreadsheet, but don't let that scare you--it's the most user-friendly spreadsheet we've ever seen in an economic sim.
Left-clicking on a town while you have a ship in port brings up a view of the settlement's buildings, which control most other game functions. Head to the shipyards to purchase ships, visit the governor's mansion to check on missions, drop into the inn for some gambling or to recruit a captain or pirate crew, and wander into the council building to hobnob with the upper crust. All activities and events are tracked in a log. Aside from a couple of miscues regarding minutiae like button size and location, the interface is a snap to learn.
The elegant trading engine at the heart of Port Royale 2 is complementary. You deal in 19 different goods, ranging from foodstuffs to building materials to finished items. Each of the 60 towns spread across the Mid-Atlantic and Caribbean, from Charleston in the north to Georgetown in the south, specializes in five products. The 48 colonial towns produce two essential goods like grain and fruit, two raw materials like sugar and cotton, and one processed item like coffee or tobacco. The 12 governor and viceroy towns produce essential goods and finished goods like meat and garments. These towns are also on European shipping lines, so luxury imports such as spices, wine, and tools can be found there. A handy map provided with the manual shows each town's products, regional specialties, and the colonial power spheres of influence.
Supply and demand rules everything. You buy low in a town where items are common and sell high in a town where they are not. You can make a killing moving coffee beans out of Venezuela, tobacco out of Cuba, and dyes out of Nassau. There are lucrative trading opportunities all over. Also, icons under needy towns alert you to what goods are scarce. Have a hold full of hemp? Scan the map and see which town is the most desperate to, um, make some rope. Such easily obtainable information makes it easy to get absorbed in the game for hours, going from port to port looking for the best deals and watching your bank account grow. It's incredibly addictive trying to figure out the most economical ways of setting up trade routes, largely because there are so many towns and so many possibilities.

Iron Man
The first Iron Man project by Sega is based on Marvel Studios' 2008 Iron Man feature film, starring Robert Downey Jr. and Terrence Howard.
Loosely based on the No. 1 film in America, Iron Man tosses you into the red-and-gold suit of Tony Stark and sets you loose on more than a dozen missions filled with guards, laser cannons and super villains that you won't find in the movie--folks such as Whiplash and Titanium Man. It might sound cool, but the problem is that this story is largely invented and strays from the plot points and character-defining moments of the film. You'll never get to care about Yinsen, Obadiah's power-hungry from the get go, and Stark almost always seems like a jerk. Plus, the cutscenes stink. Not even voiceovers from Robert Downey, Jr. and Terrence Howard can save them from being ass--there are crazy eyes, mouths not moving the right way, characters that don't look right, etc.
However, games aren't all about story, and Iron Man does have a few things going for it. Each time you're ready to jump into your flight suit, you'll choose your mission, one of the six unlockable suits of armor, and which upgrades you'd like to use. See, rather than have you earn money from your battles like the PS3/360 version of Iron Man does, this incarnation of the game upgrades your gear--repulsor, ballistics, explosives and armor--based on how much you use them. If you're like me, you'll find yourself hovering around levels and blasting evildoers with your repulsors the most, and in no time, you'll have taken your laser gauntlet from the most basic tech (fast but weak) to the mega-awesome Optimal Beam Damage. Of course, this applies to whichever device you're using, and a few will actually upgrade to the point where you need to choose which option you'll be using in battle (i.e. which type of missile you want to launch into some dude's face).
Once you're into the actual mission, Iron Man works like most third-person shooters on the PC--WASD to move, mouse for the camera and to fire weapons, etc.--but when you want to speak specifically to what makes this an Iron Man title, it comes down to suit controls. Space makes you hover, Alt kicks on the afterburner, and 1 through 4 control your energy manager. This feature actually allows you move from a balanced energy-spending state to favoring one of Iron Man's attributes. Shift the power to propulsion to fly faster, to armor to take less damage, or to weapons to wreck shop.
While this scheme works pretty well for fighting on the ground or standing/hovering in one place and blasting foes, you can't really brawl while flying. This means that you'll rocket toward your enemies, stop, and then hover around while shooting repulsor blasts. It looks and feels nothing like a real Iron Man fight. You're just some guy somberly gliding around the map.
Luckily and sadly, Iron Man isn't hard. At all. Enemy attacks do little to no damage, but if they should gang up and whittle your armor energy down to nothing, you'll have the chance to restart your heart. Basically, a minigame pops up where you have to tap a corresponding button to register a heartbeat. If for some reason you fail at this simple task, you'll consume one of your three backup power cells and be tossed back into the game. It's not that I mind a simple game--and it's way better than the uber-frustrating PS3/360 version--but when you can just sit down and plow through the game in a day, there really isn't much of an incentive to pick it up. There's no challenge.
Still, there are two problems that are evidence enough to convict this game of crimes against a PC. To begin with, it looks terrible. Everything's clearer than the PS2 versions, but the same blocky models, blank textures, and bland colors remain. The PC version even adds visual glitches such as giant brown swatches instead of shadows underneath tanks and building windows that flicker. Next, this game just isn't any fun. I haven't called out or praised any specific levels or enemies because Iron Man just blends together. You just move from one point to another eliminating whatever is in your way.
